Spring is almost here —along with a long list of chores including spring cleaning! Get a head start on the cleaning and save yourself a future headache by doing these things now.

Start thinking about which winter clothes to donate

The best ways to determine what you’re wearing (and what you’re not) is to turn all of the hangers in your closet backward. Once you wear a garment hanging in in your closet, turn the hanger back the right way. When the season ends, take inventory of all of the hangers that are backwards to get a good idea of which items you don’t wear and can donate.

Write down plans for your garden or backyard

Make your lawn the envy of the neighborhood this summer by getting a jump-start on your outdoor planning. Make a list of the supplies you need (seeds, soil, flowers, and gardening supplies) before you decide when you’ll garden. Planning ahead can save you a trip or two to the store come planting time. You’ll be able to fully enjoy your yard all summer long.

Tackle one major project each week

The most intimidating part of Spring cleaning is that there is so much to do. Trying to clean your entire home in a single day, is going to be more stressful than it is worth. Make a list of some of the bigger cleaning tasks you’d ideally like to get done: such as cleaning your baseboards, dusting your ceiling fans and light fixtures, reorganizing your pantry, etc. Then, put one task on your calendar per week and hang it somewhere you can see. What would normally have taken all day will only take 10-20 minutes per week when broken up, leaving you with a happy, clean home.

Incentivize yourself with a reward

Why do today what you can put off until tomorrow, right? Don’t let yourself put off important tasks by giving yourself or your family an incentive to get things done early. Perhaps you can plan to attend an upcoming concert or event or plan an exciting trip over Spring break. That way, whenever you feel the temptation to ignore your to-do list and watch another re-run of ‘House Hunters’ instead, you’ll have an incentive that can keep you on task and kick you into full gear.

Set yourself up for success this season by getting a jumpstart on your Spring cleaning tasks.
