Chickens are much more than just an animal on the farm. They have become a pet to be seen in the town and even in apartments. They are gaining popularity as people see how well they can be trained. A well-handled chicken can be as loving as a loyal dog. With chickens starting to be more a part of the family, we want to make sure they are comfortable. And that they are having just as much fun as we are this summer.

Water

You may be surprised to know that it is not just ducks that like water. Chickens also enjoy getting into a bit of water on a hot sunny day. They do not all love swimming, so keeping the bin shallow will be the best. A small plastic pool that you only fill partway up is a perfect option. They love to get their feet and legs cooled off. It also helps keep them from getting overheated. Some breeds are not bred for the hotter climates. Find what works best for your coop.

Frozen Fruit

Chickens love getting treats, and it is a blast watching them eat them up. Some of the best treats for chickens are fruits and vegetables. In the summer, make it extra special by freezing them before giving it to them. It is like a popsicle for your chickens. Also, some birds will not drink the water they desperately need on a summer day if the water is too warm. In a shallow dish, put water with the frozen treats. It will keep the water cold longer and encourage them to drink while trying to get their treats. A win-win situation treats and lifesaving water all in one.

Toys

Do children like toys? So do chickens. They would love to have some things to entertain themselves while you are away. Amazon has a wide selection of chicken toy choices. They have swings and other perches that they will enjoy. A little music may be the right choice with the hanging xylophone. It will be fun to see what they make of the sound. It could be more entertaining for you than for them. Get a few options, or buy one of the bundles to see what your chickens love the most.

Field Trips

Summer is a great time to explore for people and animals. We don’t always have time to spend during the rest of the year, but summer is the time to slow down and relax. While we don’t always want our chickens to have free range in our gardens, they would love to visit. Chicken having free range could cause a lot of damage. Giving them an hour or so to eat all the unwanted pests is the best for both. Other places to let them explore are the shadiest places in the yard.

Chickens are a fun animal to enjoy, just like any other pet. So pamper them just like you would any other, especially during the hot summer months.
