Anxiety is something that plagues the majority of our population in varying degrees of severity. If you’re one of millions of people who struggle with this, here are some tips you can try to help keep your anxiety under control.

Sleeping

Get a Good Night’s Sleep

A crucial element to keeping your anxiety in check is getting an adequate amount of sleep. An article written by Linda Esposito for psychologytoday.com states, “This may sound impossible if you’re accustomed to staying up late to catch up on the to-do list. But this one’s a must. Sleep deprivation is a huge anxiety culprit. Inadequate shuteye can amplify the brain’s anticipatory reactions, upping overall anxiety levels, according to research. “We all have anticipatory anxiety,” explains researcher Fugen Neziroglu. “Having moderate levels of anxiety about doing well is important. But it can be destructive when it begins to interfere with your life.” It’s impossible to have healthy emotional functioning without adequate sleep.”

Streamline your Budget

One of the biggest stressors a person can have in life is their finances. If you’re looking to bring a little more zen into your daily life, streamline your budget. Cut down on unnecessary expenses and build yourself a nest egg. Having a savings and financial stability will help bring you peace as you navigate the numerous other stressors of life.

Clean Up your Diet

Serotonin is a chemical found in your body that is known as the ‘happy chemical’. Adequate levels of it can ensure you are effectively fighting against things like depression and anxiety internally. Did you know that 90% of the serotonin your body creates is made in your gut? That means the food you eat has a drastic impact on your mood and overall well being. Processed foods, excessive sugar, and caffeine are all things you should stay away from. Cleaning up your diet will help you feel your best and aide in keeping your anxiety under control.

De-clutter

Clutter is linked to anxiety. Take stock of your surroundings. If things are messy and unorganized, it’s probably a great indication of your mental and emotional state. Cleaning can be extremely therapeutic. It can also help you feel like you’re in control. Next time you’re feeling anxious, give your space some TLC by de-cluttering and cleaning.

Accept Yourself

Your anxiety is not going to get better if you’re constantly berating yourself over it. Esposito also states, “Whether you inherited “anxiety genes” from your parents, or it’s your lifestyle, or both, accept your anxiety. It’s not about rolling over and giving up. Understand you have to work hard every day to bring calm to your environment.” Be kind to yourself. Work hard to find out what triggers you and figure out ways you can both avoid these triggers and deal with them when they arise.

Don’t let your anxiety consume your life. Take things one day at a time and use these tips to help gain control of your emotions.
