When ChatGPT launched in late 2022, it felt like magic. Millions of us suddenly had computers that could talk back, write essays, debug code, and explain quantum physics like we were five years old. Tech companies promised this was just the beginning. They told us AI would replace white-collar workers, cure diseases, usher in an age of abundance. The charts showed exponential progress. The line went up, and it would keep going up forever.

Then came 2025, the year the bubble met reality.

When GPT-5 Landed With a Thud

The turning point arrived in August with OpenAI’s launch of GPT-5. CEO Sam Altman had spent months hyping it as a “PhD-level expert in anything.” He posted cryptic images of the Death Star from Star Wars, which his fans interpreted as a symbol of ultimate power. Expectations were stratospheric.

The actual launch? More of the same. AI researcher Yannic Kilcher captured the collective disappointment in a video posted two days later: “The era of boundary-breaking advancements is over. AGI is not coming. It seems very much that we’re in the Samsung Galaxy era of LLMs.

That smartphone comparison resonated because it rang uncomfortably true. For a decade, iPhones were the most exciting consumer tech on the planet. Today, new models drop with a shrug. Sure, there are incremental upgrades, but this year’s iPhone looks and feels a lot like last year’s iPhone. Is that where we are with AI?

Meanwhile, Businesses Were Quietly Bailing

While tech CEOs made grand promises, actual businesses were discovering that AI pixie dust doesn’t work the way they’d hoped. A MIT study published in July found that 95% of companies implementing AI found zero value in it. Surveys from the US Census Bureau and Stanford University showed adoption was stalling. When pilots did launch, most stayed stuck in the testing phase, never scaling across the organization.

The reasons became clearer as the year progressed. Chatbots turned out to be better than the average human at many tasks — giving legal advice, fixing bugs, doing high school math — but they couldn’t outperform expert humans at their actual jobs. And without that capability, the promised workplace revolution simply didn’t materialize.

An Upwork study in November found that AI agents from OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Anthropic failed to complete many straightforward workplace tasks by themselves. But here’s the twist: when those same agents worked alongside people who understood them, success rates shot up dramatically. The technology works; it just can’t replace humans the way we were promised.

Are We in a Bubble? (And What Kind?)

If we’re in a bubble, what kind of bubble is it? The subprime mortgage crash of 2008 left nothing but debt and overvalued real estate. The dot-com bubble of 2000 wiped out countless companies but left behind the infant internet and a handful of startups like Google and Amazon that became today’s tech giants.

AI might be something else entirely. Companies have sunk unprecedented amounts of money into the infrastructure to build and serve AI at scale, but there’s still no clear business model. We don’t know what the killer app will be, or if there will even be one.

Some investors remain calm. Glenn Hutchins of Silver Lake Partners pointed out that most AI data centers already have solvent customers locked into contracts, with Microsoft being one of the biggest. But others see a house of cards built on circular deals and projected demand that may never materialize.

The companies that survive this moment will be the ones with enough money to outlast the uncertainty. That was the lesson from 2000: the businesses that thrived weren’t necessarily the best; they were the ones that didn’t go broke waiting for the market to mature.

What We Actually Built Here

Let’s be clear about something: this isn’t the end of AI progress. It’s a badly needed reset of our expectations. The technology is genuinely impressive — video generation models that look photorealistic, reasoning models that can solve complex problems, coding assistants that actually help. These are real achievements that would have seemed impossible just five years ago.

But we built machines that use language so compellingly that we can’t help seeing humanlike intelligence behind them, even when it’s not there. That’s not the technology’s fault; that’s ours. We’re hardwired to see minds in things that behave in certain ways, and marketers at AI companies absolutely exploited that confusion to pump up the hype.

Ilya Sutskever, one of the architects of modern AI and former chief scientist at OpenAI, now openly discusses the limitations. Large language models are excellent at learning how to do thousands of specific tasks, he explained in a November interview, but they don’t learn the underlying principles. It’s the difference between memorizing how to solve a thousand algebra problems and understanding how to solve any algebra problem.

The Reset We Actually Needed

The relentless hype wasn’t sustainable, and its collapse is genuinely a good thing. We now have space to see this technology clearly — understand what it can actually do, recognize its limitations, and figure out how to apply it in ways that create real value rather than just generating headlines.

Research is at a fever pitch. More papers are being submitted to major AI conferences than ever before. “It’s back to the age of research again,” Sutskever noted, and that’s not a setback — that’s the beginning of something new. The people building these systems are no longer just research nerds who stumbled onto something that worked; now everyone talented in technology is working on this problem.

The hype correction of 2025 doesn’t mean AI failed. It means we’re finally ready to see it for what it really is: a powerful, experimental technology we’re still learning to use. The wild decades-old dream of machines that can read, write, and think hasn’t died. It’s just getting more realistic.
