2021 has churned out a number of excellent books. Here’s a round-up of some of the best ones that were released this year.
Beautiful World, Where Are You? – Sally Rooney
This book has a way of encompassing a lot of the feelings that have surrounded the last couple years. Anxieties, climate change and political unrest are just a couple of the issues touched on in this book. Sounds familiar, right? An article written for time.com further explains by saying, “Sally Rooney’s third novel follows best friends Alice and Eileen, late 20-somethings who mostly correspond over email. Malibu Rising- Taylor Jenkins Reid
Malibu Rising seems to be the book everyone is talking about this year. It’s the tale of a rock star father and his 4 influential children who have uncomfortable relationships. Reid does a great job at showcasing family dysfunction and the tensions that go along with it.
One Last Stop- Casey McQuiston
For those who can’t get enough of a good love story, One Last Stop is the perfect read. It’s the story of a cynical girl who moves to New York. Although she doesn’t love living there, she quickly changes her attitude when she meets a girl named Jane on the subway. As this crush develops, the story takes an unexpected turn. This book might surprise you! It’s definitely worth the read.
The Other Black Girl- Zakiya Dalila Harris
Being the only Black employee at work is a huge struggle for Nella Rogers. When another Black woman is hired, the two become fast friends. However, after a series of uncomfortable events, Nella’s new friend Hazel is promoted leaving her in the dust. Shortly after, she starts receiving strange messages telling her to leave the company. But who is behind them? This thriller will have you on the edge of your seat throughout the entire book. It’s smart and sheds light on manipulation, and how it feels to work in a hostile environment. Definitely give this book a read!
While We Were Dating- Jasmine Guillory
Fans of Jasmine Guillory already know she’s a fantastic writer. Her latest novel is no different. This book tells the story of Ben who works in advertising and Anna who is a movie star. When a work campaign forces them together, these two are determined not to let their flirtations lead anywhere. However, fate might have other plans! Will they actually turn things into a real relationship? And if they do, will Ben be able to handle life in the background or will he step up to be a leading man? You’ll have to read the book to find out!
